The Journey
The first thing I always want clients to think about when they start their journey is to understand the process of life being half positive and half negative.
I always start by asking my clients, “Why do you want to achieve your goal?”
The answer will always be an emotion.
I want to feel skinny. I want to feel better about myself. I want to feel healthy. I want to feel freedom from the obsession with my weight and my lack of health!
I understand that there will always be many many reasons why it is miserable to be overweight, have chronic health problems, and feel hopeless about your health issues. The list is endless.
What I want you to look at is the thought that once you get to a goal of superior health, life will be better there. It will be better there than here. It is tricky to wrap your mind around. I want you to think about this.
I want you to know that there is never any place that is better than here!
When you achieve your goal weight and eliminate your food sensitivity symptoms, it will be amazing, I assure you.
What I want you to see is that when you're healthy, you will be dealing with your emotions and thoughts, rather than covering them up with food.
The reason clients want to be thinner and symptom free is ultimately to feel better.
Why?
Positive emotions are a beautiful thing!
Remember this though: you get to choose a better emotional state now.
You have the option to love yourself and feel positive emotions in this moment.
Many people have far worse health than you and would feel amazing if they were in your shoes!
When you think about losing weight and alleviating food sensitivity symptoms forever, remember that you get to love yourself and your life exactly how it is today.
It is counter-intuitive, but it speeds up the process of getting rid of the struggle with food and the journey is so much more enjoyable!
You can love yourself exactly the way you are today.
You can love yourself without changing any of your present symptoms or your current weight!
When you can find joy and contentment in the way things are today, you will be so much further along. This is a skill you must learn to maintain a mindset of food freedom forever. Maintaining well-being and a natural body weight is very difficult if you are unable to process and accept any situation.
Let’s pretend you are three years in your future. You have zero sensitivity symptoms and you have returned to your body’s natural weight. Life continues to unfold, and you continue to encounter life events that ask you to grow and evolve.
I will use the example of a new job.
You have decided that you don’t use food to cover up your emotions anymore and now you want to change a part of your life. You have selected to pursue your dreams and you took the step to switch to your dream job. While this sounds fantastic, it will have parts that are full of negative emotions.
You will feel fear, overwhelmed, and confused.
The old programming of your brain will be shouting: “This is hard” and “Go eat chocolate and cupcakes!!"
Please know that this will never end.
The process of growing and changing is the natural evolution of life. This is how life was intended to be. New goals are part of what makes being alive fun! But, with the new goals always comes the old thoughts and feelings of hard, insecure, awkward, and getting over yourself. If you have used food in the past to soothe yourself through this, you will be tempted to do it again.
Therefore, you must learn the skill of knowing that where ever you are in the process, it is perfect and find joy in the moment!
There is no place to get to.
Where you are at is perfect.
When you get to your health and weight goal, that will be perfect as well.
Your life is perfect exactly the way it is.
You have the negative with the positive. Know that you can handle any negative emotion. It will be a part of your life no matter what. The process of the journey is enjoying the positive emotions and learning that the negative emotions are only indications. It is the becoming of who you are, the fuller version of yourself, which is the best part.
