Counting Your Thoughts

Have you ever wanted to get something out of your head but the more you want it out the stronger and longer is stays?

Circling and going round and round. The thought keeps blasting around your head recklessly.

It feels awful, and you don't want to think about it, but it won’t stop.

It's similar to OCD or rumination.

It’s the constant thinking about something you don't want to be thinking about and it's making you feel awful.

Our brains are negative and like to scan the environment for danger.

They are constantly looking for what’s wrong and thinking about what could go wrong.

This could include thinking about how stupid other people are, and how you hate Sally Mae for what she did at the party last night.

Today this is what is "dangerous" is.

Danger looks like not being included, possibly losing a job (even though another one is always around the corner), your kid "possibly" getting hurt. Ect.

The brain goes to work thinking all the negative things in the world.

Every time it runs through your head, you count it.

Keep a log of how many times the thought runs through your head.

This process keeps you neutral and not engaging with the thought which takes away the power of the thought. And allows you to let the thought pass.

The longest I've ever used this tool is 3-4 days.
